Abstract:From its creation in 1961, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the OECD, has had a recognised role and status as an agency for promoting the liberalisation of cross-border transactions. For almost half a century the OECD and its precursor have had the officially designated task of helping to make international trade and capital flows freer. The purpose of this paper is to describe and review this aspect of the Organisation's mandate, and to examine its relevance in the present state of the world's economy and the world trading and investment systems.
