| Abstract: | The existence and the properties of classical cycles in industrial production for the G7 together with most major European countries are examined in the article. The authors investigate the international nature of cyclical movements free from arbitrary assumptions about the trend. It is shown that cyclical asymmetry is common, with slopes during declines being generally larger in magnitude than during expansions. The results indicate that macroeconomists should be alert to turning points, both peaks and troughs, resulting from external factors, rather than always being the consequence of domestic events. |
