Abstract: | It is suggested that a substantial proportion of the windfall payments received by consumers from building societies in 1997 was promptly transferred to some form of savings, while they also took the opportunity to make large scale purchases, which caution about employment prospects and future interest rates had deterred many form doing in recent years. These included cars, holidays, furniture, electrical goods and significant DIY projects which would otherwise have involved credit. Many of these items have long replacement cycles and purchases made in mid-1997 may have consequences for sales in 1998. |
