Abstract:One of the crucial issues of economic reforms in the Czech Republic has been the liberalisation of foreign trade. Tariff and non-tariff trade barriers were substantially reduced and the state monopoly of foreign trade was eliminated right at the beginning of the reforms. State exchange controls were replaced by free convertibility of the Czech crown for current transactions. International trade theory predicts that trade specialisation and division of labour increase as countries which are at different levels of economic development remove trade barriers and intensify economic relationships with each other.
