Abstract:It is argued that, concerning child labour, there is much to be done. However, the precise policy depends on the economic milieu. The main policy divide is btw. legal interventions and 'collaborative interventions', that is, public actions altering the economic environment such as the availability of good schools, the provision of free meals etc. Examples are discussed and arguments are given to show that such interventions are, in general, a desirable way of curbing child labour. However, many of these actions may not be feasible. Some of the models of child labour are used to investigate the impact of international standards. It is found that one beneficial effect of such a standard could be the help provided to developing nations to make coordinated improvement in their working conditions, without causing a flight of capital.
