Abstract: | In this study, foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows are endogenized in a structuralist general equilibrium framework. This study's economy consists of: (i) a non-tradable goods (henceforth as: non-trbls.) sector and (ii) an export processing zone (EPZ) hosting transnational corporations. It is found that most of the commonly pursued policies considered are likely to have a negative impact on the balance of payments due to: (i) income redistribution towards groups more likely to spend on imported goods, (ii) higher capacity utilization in the EPZ, and (iii) the excess supply of non-trbls. created, which in turn has an adverse valuation effect through a real internal depreciation etc. |
