| Abstract: | Many location problems arise in connection with the planning and organization of computer networks which are abstractly similar to, or generalizations of, location problems that have been studied in operational research. Location in wide-area networks may be categorized into those primarily concerned with placement problems of hardware and those with software problems. A broad overview of some of these location and hardware components is given, together with a brief appraisal of the state of the art for various problems, and it is shown that there is much in this field that is interesting and challenging for locational analysts. |
