Abstract:Fortunately for American business, the traditional focus of business ethics on external corporate matters is broadening to include ethical conduct toward employees. Borrowing a leaf from Japanese management practices, managers in the USA are waking up to the substantial, long-term benefits of a dedicated, involved, and satisfied workforce. Ten elements of employee involvement are reviewed. Teamwork productivity is analyzed. Making the team concept work depends on management's ability to reverse the heritage of distrust between workers and managers. A new corporate responsibility is defined and its implications are discussed. The usefulness of the commitment model is considered.
