Abstract:The nature of hydroelectric energy and the possible ways of integrating it into modern power systems are discussed. The role of tidal power and pumpage storage schemes is outlined. The principal constraints to the wider development of hydropower are concerned with the effect on the environment, the high initial cost, and the uncertainty over the future price of oil. It is discussed how the challenge each represent is being countered. Recent technical advances, particularly in the civil engineering field, are described. A brief account of some of the institutional problems encountered in promoting hydroelectric projects, particularly those where more than one country is involved is given.
