Abstract:There are two alternative interpretations of European integration. In the Maastricht treaty, Europe is envisaged as homogenous, centralized and bureaucratic state. Alternative to this can be seen in the emerging international business and information networks.European managers, and not politicians, are the main agents of integration.Slovenia should therefore not pay too much attention to the association agreement, because it is only a manifestation of Europe as a political project. On the contrary, Slovenia should consistently implement measures that will in few years enable her to apply directly for the membership in the EU.The basis for this strategy is "social capital" of Slovene companies, that is, the ability of the people to work together for u common vision.Because of the smallness of the country, its major partner in the integration process should be other European regions. Similarly, Slovene companies should accommodate themselves in such a way to be able to become parts of the decentralized European business networks.
