Abstract:After the fall of the iron curtain, Austria has become a small leading country in the Central and Eastern European region. It is also more and more obvious, that socialist countries have gravely deteriorated natural environment , and that this also adversely affects Austria. Environmental problems of the region are shortly presented, and then it is analysed what Austria as a leading country could do to solve them. The analysis leads to the conclusion that Austria as a small leading force lacks both the political power and the economic resources needed to substantially influence the behaviour of the neighbouring countries towards the environment. Some data are also presented to show that Austria is neither willing nor able to carry the financial burden of the environmental clean-up. The prospects for the environment in the region are thus rather dull.(p.61)
