Abstract:Financial and employment data from companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index from 1981 to 1992 were studied to examine the relationships between changes in employment and financial performance. A total of 5,479 observations were included in the sample. Companies were categorized based on their level of change in employment and their level of change in assets. Both Employment Downsizers and Asset Downsizers were generated returns of assets that were lower than those of Stable Employers.
