Abstract:The paper contends that bank mergers and the rise of electronic marketplaces could alter the structure of the foreign exchange market. The author considers the following subjects: Decrease in the value of spreads due to bank mergers; Profit of banks from the foreign exchange market; Changes to the foreign exchange market with the advent of electronic trading. The author states that in foreign exchange it's a truism that size matters. Niche players are being squeezed out of the market because they can't compete with the big banks on price, and even the heavyweights are swallowing each other up in a bid to become the most powerful institution. For now, there's one clear leader. Citigroup has re- emerged in this year's eagerly awaited annual foreign exchange poll as the top dog.
