Abstract:In the seventies nobody worried about solvency of countries. Everybody assumed unlimited borrowing prospects. Now a lot of agencies are making risks ratings on economic as well as political grounds. These evaluations may be misleading (e.g. showing Mexico less risky than Hungary). A new Institute for International Finance was formed in Washington, which applies a new approach Bankers take into account the forecasts of IIF but they supplement the information by visits, committee ratings. The country risk is not a number but a matrix, depending on time, sources and borrowing sectors.
