Abstract:Debt-for-export swaps have been hailed as a novel way of retiring sovereign debt. This latest twist to the debt/ equity school of dealing with sovereign debt may not be as successful for other banks and countries as it was for the First Interstate and Peru. And even the Peruvian deal is problematic. In many ways these deals are countertrades with longer maturities. A key issue is the basket of exported goods. Evidently, the exporting countries try to get rid of those goods which they cannot export otherwise.
