Abstract:Japanese manufacturing investment in the UK has grown at an increasing rate since its early take-off in the 1970s. Patterns and processes in Japanese overseas investment in the post-war period are subdivided into three phases. The history of Japanese investment in the UK is examined and its EEC context is highlighted. The characteristics of Japanese manufacturers are described and discussed using survey results. With growing protectionism and more recently the growing value of the yen the existing plants are likely to diversify their product ranges and expand.
