Abstract:It is demonstrated that evaluation of the reliability at the inspection points together with the knowledge of the smoothness and monotonicity of the function over an inspection interval simplifies the calculations considerably while giving a good approximation. It is shown that the average reliability over an inspection period may be approximated by a linear function giving a relative error of the order 10 p.c. and by a cubic resulting in a relative error of less than 1 p.c. Although the examples treated are those for which analytic solutions were possible, the behaviour of the reliability is quite typical. engineering is a massive O.R. application area enjoying significant growth.
