Abstract:The market for international telephone services in Europe is rapidly changing. Customers are partly in a position to choose between various service providers despite the existing telephone monopoly of national telephone companies. With an increasing number of new telephone services the market is noticeably becoming intransparent for both customers and service providers. This article depicts which telephone service attributes to which extend are important to the customers resulting from a survey of 82 companies in Switzerland. The paper tries to solve questions like: Which are the dominant characteristics to describe international telephone services? How well fulfill the services of the major providers the requirement of various market segments? What would be the market shares of telephone service providers if the Swiss market was liberalized?
