Abstract:This article deals with the question what drives the observed rapid growth of outsourcing (hereafter as: outs.) in U.S. manufacturing. It is asked whether technological diffusion (here as: t-diff.) driven by R&D spillovers is in part responsible for the growth of atypical work arrangements. Based on data of t-diff. since the 1970s, it is shown that technological factors may have contributed to the spread of outs. When sample composition effects are accounted for, technological innovation reduces outs. in high-tech industries. In addition, highlighted is the importance of distinguishing btw. 'rent' and 'pure knowledge' spill-overs.
