Abstract:Companies in the manufacturing and service sectors are increasingly turning to outsourcing (hereafter as: outs.) as lower priced competition continues to grow globally. This article explores the long-term costs occurring as a result of outs.: loss of control of intellectual property (here as: IP.) and loss or dilution of core competencies. Outs. of several key functions can actually lead to a "hollowing" of the corporation. The article also takes a look at how IP. protection is becoming a competitive advantage for those countries trying to attract outs. contracts.
