Abstract:In this study the authors introduce a new explanation and empirical evidence by illustrating that rural subsidies to large farmers tend to be connected with low land productivity and excessive deforestation. The authors develop a lobbying model between the rich farmers and government politicians, where the farmers are able to increase their subsidies from the government through bribes or political contributions to the government politicians, because of these actions the farmers are able to tilt the bargaining game. The authors suggest that such procedures cause inefficiency with the modes of production chosen by the farmers. The study validates some of these suggestions in the model by examining new data gathered from nine countries in Latin America.
