Abstract:Unlike previous, individual-based research on expatriation, this article focuses on the expatriation of whole work teams, which is a major and likely also a growing phenomenon. The paper studies the contextual performance management of expatriate teams of seventeen organizations, brought together to work on a development project of a new product. The findings of the study indicate that organizational differences can be more central to the expatriate team's experiences of expatriation than national, cultural or institutional differences. Diverse stakeholder expectations leading to tensions were found to be a challenge to the teams that were examined in this study, and the results indicate that respect for stakeholder objectives and cooperative interaction are the most essential strategies making integrative outcomes possible.
