Abstract: | This paper is about Serge Tchuruk, chairman of Alcatel, who has a broadband plan to ride out the telecom slump. Serge Tchuruk had announced a profit warning that enraged money managers. Fidelity's chief in Paris found the surprise so "extremely irritating" that he dumped the fund's 10% stake in French telecom. As Alcatel's stock tanked, the press sharpened the guillotine. Tchuruk has succeeded in reviving what was, when he took over six years ago, a money- losing conglomerate that encompassed nuclear power plants, high-speed trains, magazines, radio stations, and even vineyards. Today Alcatel is a $30 billion streamlined supplier of telecom equipment, the only European company to play in the same league with Nortel, Lucent, and Cisco. |
