Abstract:As the world holds its breath over Russian reform, Russia is already transforming into something new. The authors state that a distinctly Russian model of capitalism seems to be emerging. The focus on economic reforms tends to ignore another important question. Russia may or may be reforming, but it is certainly transforming. The authors ask the question - into what. Two big shifts are now taking place in the economy. One is the rise of national conglomerates, which are driving a restructuring process, throughout the economy. The other is the dismantling of the "virtual economy": the system of barter and non- payments which held back economic growth for much of the 1990s.
