Abstract:This article investigates the wage setting rigidities in Great Britain in 1980s and 1990s. Using the generalised Altonji and Devereux (2000) model with some modifications, the authors find that real wage rigidities are more prevalent than nominal rigidities in Great Britain. However, the real rigidities have decreased during the time period. The results also support the hypotheses that if firms are not able to cut real wages when facing negative demand shocks, they may opt for laying off workers.
