Abstract:Benchmarking projects require valid and comprehensive efficiency estimates of various firms to assess their relative performance and to derive company specific targets for improvement. In this context, data envelopment analysis (DEA), a family of OR-methods can provide more powerful multivariate efficiency benchmarks for corporations and public sector organizations. The basic DEA model developed in 1978 by Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes estimates non-parametric "best-practice" output-input functions for companies and business units. Input and output variables included in a production model can be measured on different scales. Various extensions of the basic DEA-model enable investigators to relax many of its restricting assumptions. The article lists such extensions and demonstrates how to select DEA models best suited for benchmarking questions.
