Abstract:The process of wage determination has an obvious impact on the long-run rate of unemployment in an economy. The paper deals with unions' influence on wages, and in particular with how wages depend on the degree of centralization in the wage settlements. A dynamic model is considered which includes flows of workers between firms and in and out of employment. With less than full centralization, the wages chosen by unions are lower the higher is the degree of labour mobility. Wages are also lower the higher is the degree of centralization, unless labour mobility is very high.
