Abstract: | The rapid development of the labour market for immigrant workers is described and analyzed. Although it represents officially only 1 p.c. of the active population, this is an important socio-economic phenomenon for Japan, a country that remains committed to the principle of ethnic homogeneity. The stratification of this new labour market is investigated. A typology of the Asian countries is developed for which Japan seems, in terms of employment, a land of promising opportunities. Immigration as the price to be paid for internalization is characterized. The government's efforts to exert strict control over this type of labour mobility are highlighted. Some possible future consequences are considered. |
