Abstract:Disabled often suffer from restricted mobility, limited self-care, communication difficulties, multiple sensor impairments and inappropriate social behavior. Yet recent pilot programmes in some industrialized countries have demonstrated that with suitable individualized training and subsequent support they can hold down paid competitive jobs in integrated work settings. ILO Convention NO. 159 requires that appropriate vocational rehabilitation measures be made available to all categories of disabled people. The main forms of supported employment and the essential components of effective vocational rehabilitation programmes are described.
