Abstract:Based on an experiment on charity to real-life welfare recipients, the paper explores the determinants of generosity. The effects of various measures of unconditional altruism, and conditional or reciprocal altruism are investigated. The findings suggest a existence of conditional or reciprocal altruism. The results also show that those who reported themselves to be unconditional altruist make offers that are highly elastic in relation to the visible worthiness of the recipient. This may imply that unconditional altruism and reciprocal altruism are not independent motives, a combination that is named as empathic responsiveness by the author.
