Abstract:Arguments in favour of a reduction in the lenght of working time in France have undergone an extraordinary reversal in the past 10 years. In the 1980s trade unions saw shorter working time as a social policy instrument but a decade later the reduction in working time was no longer on the political agenda nor a subject for collective bargaining. The employers gave an impetus to the management and reorganization of working time hoping to improve firms' competitiveness and this meant a transfer from a social to an economic rationale.
