| Abstract: | Transfer lines to manufacture car engines represent a considerable investment for the companies concerned. These transfer lines are highly automated and use automated material handling devices to move material from one machine to the next. The size and position of buffers are important as these can protect the line from the effects of an individual machine breaking down. The authors of this article discuss the application of simulated annealing to help determine the size and position of buffers in transfer lines. |
