Abstract:The social contract that has helped to maintain industrial peace in Ireland for nine years is now up for renegotiation. But not everyone is keen to do a deal. Jane Pickard examines how well it has met its aims so far and where it might lead to next. While Britons bicker about subsidiarity and beef bans, Ireland has quietly become European. Directives, such as the recent one on working time, which cause British ministers to go purple with rage, pass through the Dail without opposition.
