Abstract:How do successful firms keep high-quality ideas flowing? To answer this question, 50 Fortune 250 firms were surveyed as portions of larger studies of new product development. The research managers can stimulate individual abilities for generation of useful ideas through the following policies: sabbaticals, release-time and guidelines - award programs, idea campaigns and contests - job rotation, involvement and exposure. The role of concept generating teams is described. Six approaches to handle ideas are dealt with: idea inventories, idea clearinghouses, idea brokers, fitting teams, screening teams and review teams. The need of acceptance and commitment, guiding principles and effective organizational climate is emphasized.
