Abstract:Violent crime -- even the perception that an area has high crime rates -- creates obvious social problems that seriously threaten the competitiveness of America's urban business firms. Based on a study conducted in one high-crime area -- metropolitan Miami, Florida -- this article describes ways business can actively partner with public agencies to address key causes and consequences of violent crime. It then explores the potential for such corporate citizenship to strengthen social ties and revive a sense of community that will be vital for America's economic health in the next millennium.
