Abstract:Regarding the market shares of foreign banks, Germany and the U.S. seem to represent two polar cases. While Germany is well integrated into international capital flows, market shares of foreign banks are among the lowest of industrialized countries. In the US, by contrast, where branching restrictions have hampered the regional expansion of (domestic and foreign) banks until recently, foreign banks still hold substantially larger shares of the commercial banking market. This paper analyzes whether markets serviced by domestic and foreign banks in the two economies are segmented.
