Abstract:This paper aims at analyzing self-reported leniency toward software (hereafter as: s.) piracy (as: s-p.) systematically, using an approach based on empirical factors, rather than ethical ones. The studied empirical factors as follows: i. social acceptance of s-p., ii. the cost of original s., iii. urgency of the subject's s. need, iv. availability of original s., v. knowledge of computer s. copyright law, vi. gender, vii. monthly household income, and viii. education level. This is the first exploratory research to study the interaction effects among factors influencing the reported leniency towards s-p. at the individual level. There are new insights provided to software companies and government officials developing programmes to promote the concept of anti-piracy among s. consumers.
