Abstract:This study uses the exceptional variation in municipality-level unemployment (here as: unempl.) in Sweden during the 1990s to identify the effect of unempl. on crime. Results as follows: i. There is a statistically and economically significant effect of general unempl. on the incidence of certain types of crime, e.g. auto theft, burglary etc., ii. There is no evidence found for the popular view that youth unempl. matters for crime, and iii. Prime-aged unempl. is robustly correlated with main categories of youthful crimes etc.
