Abstract: | This article investigates the influence of unemployment on property crimes and on violent crimes in France in 1990-2000. A regional-level data set is constructed with measures of crimes as reported to the Ministry of Interior. In this study measures of the share of unemployed as well as other social, economic and demographic variables are constructed using multiple waves of the French Labor Survey. A classic Becker-typpe model is estimated. In this model, unemployment is a measure of how potential criminals fare in the legitimate job market. The results indicate that crime and unemployment are positively associated. It is also found that increases in youth unemployment induce increases in crime. This effect is causal for burglaries, thefts and drug offenses. In conclusion, to combat crime all strategies designed to combat youth unemployment should be examined. |
