Abstract:As did many other developing countries in the early 1990s, Colombia decided to open its market to foreign competition, thus abandoning the protectionist policy in force for many decades. The opening of the Colombian economy has exposed local producers not only to foreign competition, but also to the consequences of an overabundance of supplies and an excess of the operating capacity of foreign industrial countries. This situation is especially dramatic in petrochemicals, compound fertilizers, textiles, agricultural products, etc.
