Abstract:Previous studies have been unclear and contradictory as to the forces which influence internationalization of franchise operations. Factors implicit in franchising influence this to some degree, given that franchisors must make significantly less adaptation than would a firm entering into exporting for the first time. The use of discriminant analysis revealed that firm characteristics were much less significant in predicting entry into international operations by franchisors than were managerial attitudes. Factorial analysis of the items identified by discriminant analysis revealed that two common factors - desire to expand and desire to increase profits - were most important in the decision to internationalize operations
