Abstract:From a manager's perspective, tools for monitoring the effects of continuous improvement projects, which have been started within the value chain of a company, are needed. For this purpose we suggest the so-called "half- life model". It is based on the practical experience, that any defect level decreases at a constant rate over a certain time period. The half-life model measures the time it takes to achieve a 50% improvement in a specific parameter, e.g. deferred deliveries or wrong deliveries. The paper explains the mathematical formulation of the half-life model and gives examples for its practical use. Futhermore, it contains empirical evidence from the Electronics Industri. Four performance measures have proven that faster improvements lead to significant better results.
