Abstract: | Franchising (hereafter as: f-g.) has attracted the attention of a variety of researchers from different academic backgrounds. This paper draws together this research by juxtaposing the two key theories used to explain f-g., resource scarcity and agency theory, with the empirical findings regarding three key f-g. constructs: franchise initiation, subsequent propensity to franchise, and franchise performance. It is suggested that research emphasis needs to shift toward understanding why firms initiate f-g. and how f-g. impacts different types of organizational performance. |
