Abstract: | The authors of the article provide an abridged version of the Evaluation of the Economic Situation. They state that the world economy is on the threshold of an upturn. Having been exposed to serious strains last year, it has, since the end of 2001, moved away from the cyclical weakness. The worldwide recession that had been feared in the wake of the terrorist attacks did not materialize. The authors consider the US economy and state that it has seen revitalization even earlier than anticipated by the Institutes: real gross domestic product (GDP) was on the increase again as early as the fourth quarter of 2001. In Western Europe, while the rise in production was still somewhat restrained at the beginning of the year, consumer confidence and the business climate improved significantly. |
