Abstract:To design effective Web home pages (hereafter as: W. pg./ W. pgs.) in organizations, it is necessary to understand the fundamental drivers of user's perception (here as: pcpn.) of W. pgs. This study uses Kaplan's informational (as: info-al.) model of place pcpn. from the field of environmental psychology to predict that only two dimensions, that is, understanding of information on a W. pg., and the involvement potential of a W. pg., should adequately capture W. pg. pcpn. at a molar level. These dimensions' existence is empirically verified and valid scales are developed for measuring them. Using a W. pg. as a stimulus in a lab experiment, it is found that understanding and involvement together account for a significant amount of the variance in the attitude toward the W. pg. and in the intention to browse the underlying Web site. It is shown that the info-al. model is a parsimonious and powerful theoretical framework to measure users' pcpn. of W. pgs. and it could potentially serve as a guide to W. pg. design and testing efforts.
