Abstract:The skills of access to information technology become valued commodity for people in local community settings. A project is reported and evaluated, which aimed at to provide non-employed people with access to IT, thus encouraging the development of computer applications relevant to their community. The three-years project named SPRITE (Sheffield People's Resource for Information Technology) differs from other studies of unemployment. The emphasis is shifted away from documenting psychologically harmful effects to evaluating the potential of an intervention strategy, using action research. The approach focuses on an analysis of groups and organizations in the community, including training.
