Abstract:Six months ago there was widespread concern about the weakness of the world economy: the US growth pause seemed to be in danger of turning into a recession; there was little evidence of a genuine recovery in Japan; and Europe seemed to be suffering a significant downturn. The mood is now very different. The US has rebounded much more strongly than we, and most others, expected. The sensational first quarter GDP figures confirm the end of a three year period of stangation in Japan. In Europe activity remained weak.
