| Abstract: | The recovery in the Japanese economy -- which was already underway in the second half of last year -- accelerated in the first quarter, according to official figures. Indeed, GDP grew by 3% in the first quarter alone taking it to a level 5.7% above a year ago. This puts Japan well ahead of other major economies in the growth league. The surge in activity recorded in the first quarter was surprisingly strong. Personal consumption also rose strongly in the first quarter, registering a 2.4% increase to stand 5% up on a year ago. |
