Abstract:In the first half of 1996 the Japanese economy was the fastest growing major economy. GDP grew by 2.9% in the first quarter alone, though some of this growth is attributable to the "leap year effect" caused by an additional day's economic activity. GDP fell in the second quarter but the fall was less than expected at 0.7%. Given the out-turn for the first half of the year GDP would still be 3.7% up in 1996 as a whole even if GDP did not grow in the second half of the year.
