Abstract: | Strong US growth seen in the first half of 1996 seems to have resumed in the last few months of 1996 after a pause over the summer. The 100 basis point rise in long term interest rates in the first half of the year seems to have hit the housing market but consumer spending and business investment have remained strong Robust personal income growth, driven by steady increases in employment and solid wage growth, should keep consumer spending growing healthily. |
